Introduction
Startups usually raise money by selling ownership to venture capital investors. But there is another option that does not require giving up as much ownership. It is called venture debt.
What Is Venture Debt?
Venture debt is a type of loan for startups that have already raised money from venture capitalists. Unlike traditional bank loans, venture debt is designed for young companies that may not yet be profitable. Lenders usually also receive warrants, which give them the right to buy a small amount of stock later.
Why Startups Use It
Venture debt lets startups extend their runway, meaning the amount of time before they need to raise more money. It helps founders avoid giving up too much ownership too early. Companies often use it to fund growth, buy equipment, or bridge the gap between funding rounds.
The Risks
Debt must be repaid, even if the company struggles. If a startup cannot pay, lenders may take control of its assets. When Silicon Valley Bank, a major venture debt lender, collapsed in 2023, many startups faced uncertainty about their financing.
Conclusion
Venture debt is a useful tool for growing startups, but it must be used carefully. It shows how many different ways companies can raise money!
