Introduction

Turkey sits at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, with its largest city, Istanbul, spanning both continents. This unique location has made Turkey an important hub for trade, manufacturing, and tourism for centuries.

A Trade Bridge

Turkey controls the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits, which connect the Black Sea to the Mediterranean. Ships carrying grain, oil, and goods pass through these waters. Turkey also has a customs union with the European Union, making it easier to sell manufactured goods to Europe.

Key Industries

Turkey has a large manufacturing base, producing cars, textiles, appliances, and steel. Many European car companies build vehicles there. Tourism is also huge, with millions of visitors coming to Istanbul, the Mediterranean coast, and historic sites like Cappadocia. Turkish Airlines flies to more countries than almost any other airline.

Economic Challenges

Turkey has struggled with high inflation and a falling currency, the lira. Unusual policies that kept interest rates low despite rising prices made inflation worse, reaching over 80% in 2022. Since 2023, the central bank has raised rates sharply to bring inflation down.

Conclusion

Turkey's location gives it enormous economic potential as a bridge between continents. Managing inflation will be key to unlocking that potential!
