Introduction

At this point, it is impossible to deny that artificial intelligence (or AI) is going to play an incredibly large role in the workforce in the future, as it is already being implemented into the labor market. AI can generate solutions to complex problems in seconds, and offers efficiency that the average human simply cannot match. And if that’s not enough, the latest updates and versions are being pumped out by the day, each better than the last. This leaves many workers wondering, can AI do my job better than I can? Will I lose my job to a robot?

But there are limits to what AI can do, which means that, at least for now, technology cannot run the world on its own. For example, AI cannot replicate human relationship-building, decision making under pressure, and judgement/empathy. And yet, entry level jobs are growing increasingly harder to find.

What is Job Automation?

AI job automation is the use of smart computer systems in areas of the workforce that normally would require human thought or effort. Unlike physical machines working on an assembly line, this type of automation uses artificial intelligence to read text, answer questions, analyze numbers, and make decisions. While AI can be used to simply speed up tedious processes, in jobs that center on repetitive data tasks, basic writing, or routine administration, artificial intelligence has the capability to replace a human in that role, which is where the issue of unemployment may arise. But the biggest impact of AI is not actually firing current workers, but reducing the hiring of new ones. Following the rise of generative AI, entry level jobs in software engineering and customer service dropped by about 20%.


What Skills Do You Need?

Therefore, some of the aforementioned skills that AI lacks become increasingly important in the modern world. From a consulting perspective, empathy is one of such skills. AI can attempt to simulate empathetic tones, but cannot build a genuine emotional connection or understand a client’s uncertainty or fear. On the other hand, humans have the ability to account for stakeholders’ less obvious concerns and identify emotional signals. They must be able to create an environment that might make a client feel psychologically safe and secure.

Another skill is problem solving in cases that involve unpredictable ethical, political, financial, and human factors. A major strength of AI is the ability to provide solutions for very linear problems, but cannot compare to humans in dealing with messy situations that may not have one clear answer. Therefore, it becomes a valuable skill for humans to be able to use their life experiences and find deeper solutions to complex problems.

For example, if a city struggles with traffic congestion, AI might suggest changing traffic light timing and widening busy roads. However, a human might observe the habits of commuters or interview shop keepers. Perhaps they are able to find that due to a recent policy change, school start times and office hours align in the same 30 minute window. While the data may cause AI to opt for an expensive construction project, the human ability to analyze both political and human factors allows them to suggest staggered work hours, and the resolution of the problem without spending a cent.

The last skill that is important in order to protect against job automation is long term relationship building. As a whole, companies find value in individuals that have mastered human centric skills, such as conflict resolution and negotiation. Negotiation is a dynamic process of building long-term relationships based on trust, where cognitive biases, cultural values, and leadership aspirations all play a role. The ability to interpret body language and create mutually beneficial solutions allow for the preservation of long time relationships and alliances between organizations, departments, or even employees. AI will never be able to fully replicate this skill.

A major takeaway is that interpersonal skills will grow extremely valuable as AI replaces tedious “grunt” work. While algorithms excel at processing data and automating repetitive tasks, they lack the emotional intelligence required to build trust, navigate office politics, and inspire teams. Consequently, the future workplace will prioritize leaders who can read a room, resolve conflicts, and collaborate creatively. Human empathy and subtle intuition are no longer just "soft skills"—they are the ultimate competitive advantage in an automated world.
