Introduction

About a decade ago, Portugal was in deep financial trouble and needed an international bailout. Today, it is often held up as one of Europe's comeback stories, with strong tourism, growing tech companies, and a government budget in much better shape.

The Crisis Years

Like Greece, Portugal was hit hard by the European debt crisis. In 2011, it received a bailout of around 78 billion euros from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund. In exchange, it cut spending and raised taxes. Unemployment rose above 16%, and many young Portuguese left to find work abroad.

The Turnaround

Portugal's recovery was driven by exports, tourism, and investment. Lisbon and Porto became popular destinations for travelers and digital nomads. The country attracted tech companies and startups, and Lisbon hosts Web Summit, one of the largest tech conferences in the world. Portugal even ran budget surpluses in some recent years.

New Challenges

Success has brought new problems. Housing prices and rents have soared, especially in Lisbon, making it hard for locals to afford homes. Wages remain lower than in much of Western Europe. The government has been working on housing policies and ways to keep young talent in the country.

Conclusion

Portugal proves that a country can bounce back from a deep crisis through smart reforms and new industries. Its turnaround is an inspiring lesson in economic resilience!
