Introduction
Why are people in some countries much richer than in others? A big part of the answer is productivity. Economists often say that productivity is not everything, but in the long run, it is almost everything.
What Is Productivity?
Productivity measures how much output is produced for each unit of input, often per hour of work. If a worker can make 10 shirts an hour instead of 5 because of better tools, productivity has doubled. Higher productivity means an economy can produce more goods and services with the same amount of effort.
What Drives It
Productivity grows through better technology, more education and training, improved management, and investment in tools and equipment. The invention of electricity, computers, and the internet all led to big jumps in productivity. Many economists believe artificial intelligence could be the next major boost.
Why It Matters
When workers are more productive, companies can pay higher wages without raising prices as much. Over time, rising productivity is what allows living standards to improve. If productivity growth slows, wages and economic growth tend to slow as well.
Conclusion
Productivity is the secret ingredient behind economic growth. Every new invention and every new skill you learn helps the economy do more with less!
