Introduction

India and China have some of the largest economies on Earth, yet the average person in those countries earns far less than someone in Switzerland or Norway. To compare living standards, economists use per capita measures.

What Does Per Capita Mean?

Per capita means per person. Per capita income or GDP per capita is calculated by dividing a country's total income or economic output by its population. It gives a rough idea of how much economic value there is for each person.

Why It Matters

Total GDP shows the size of an economy, while GDP per capita shows how wealthy the average person might be. For example, India's total economy is one of the world's largest, but because it has over 1.4 billion people, its GDP per capita is much lower than smaller countries like Denmark.

Its Limits

Per capita figures are averages, so they do not show how income is distributed. A country could have a high average income while many people remain poor. Economists also adjust per capita income for purchasing power parity to account for different price levels across countries.

Conclusion

Per capita income is a useful tool for comparing living standards, but it is only part of the story. Looking at inequality and other measures gives a fuller picture!
