Introduction
Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin, you have probably heard these names at school or online. Cryptocurrencies are digital forms of money that are not controlled by any government or bank. Some people see them as the future of finance, while others think they are risky bubbles. To form your own opinion, it helps to understand how they actually work.
What Is Cryptocurrency?
A cryptocurrency is a digital currency that uses cryptography, a type of advanced math, to secure transactions. Bitcoin, created in 2009 by an anonymous person or group called Satoshi Nakamoto, was the first. There will only ever be 21 million bitcoins, which is part of why supporters compare it to digital gold. Thousands of other cryptocurrencies have been created since then.
How the Blockchain Works
Most cryptocurrencies run on a blockchain, which is a shared public record of every transaction. Instead of one bank keeping the records, thousands of computers around the world keep copies. New transactions are grouped into blocks and added to the chain in order. Because so many copies exist, changing past records is extremely difficult.
The Risks
Crypto prices are famously volatile, and Bitcoin has dropped more than 70% from its peak several times. Some crypto exchanges have collapsed, like FTX in 2022, causing customers to lose money. Scams and hacks are also common in the crypto world. Unlike bank deposits, most crypto holdings are not protected by government insurance.
Conclusion
Cryptocurrency is digital money secured by cryptography and recorded on blockchains. It has passionate supporters and serious risks, including big price swings and scams. If you are curious, learn as much as you can before ever investing. Stay curious and stay careful!
