Introduction
When people talk about the biggest economies in Asia, they usually mention China, Japan, and India. But Indonesia, a country spread across more than 17,000 islands, has quietly become one of the largest economies in the world. With over 270 million people, it is the fourth most populous country on Earth, and its economy has grown steadily for decades.
A Young and Growing Workforce
One of Indonesia's biggest strengths is its population. The median age is around 30, which means a huge share of people are working or about to start working. A young workforce creates demand for housing, phones, cars, and services, and it gives companies plenty of workers to hire. Economists call this a demographic dividend, and Indonesia is right in the middle of it.
Natural Resources and Nickel
Indonesia is rich in natural resources like coal, palm oil, and especially nickel. Nickel is a key ingredient in electric vehicle batteries, and Indonesia holds some of the largest reserves in the world. Instead of just exporting raw nickel, the government banned raw ore exports so companies would build processing plants inside the country. This strategy has brought billions of dollars in foreign investment and created thousands of jobs.
Challenges Along the Way
Indonesia still faces real problems. Its islands make building roads, ports, and power lines expensive. Many workers are in the informal economy, meaning they do not have steady contracts or benefits. Corruption and complicated regulations can also scare away investors. The government has been trying to fix this by building new infrastructure and even planning a brand new capital city, Nusantara, on the island of Borneo.
Conclusion
Indonesia shows how a large, young population combined with smart use of natural resources can power long-term growth. It still has hurdles to clear, but many economists expect it to become one of the top five economies in the world in the coming decades. Keep an eye on Indonesia, because its story is just getting started!
