Introduction

Checks are less common than they used to be, but you may still need to write one to pay rent, give a gift, or pay certain bills. Knowing how to write a check correctly is a useful money skill.

The Basic Parts

Start by writing the date in the top right corner. On the line that says Pay to the Order Of, write the name of the person or business you are paying. In the small box, write the amount in numbers, like 125.50. On the line below, write the amount in words, like One hundred twenty-five and 50/100.

Finishing the Check

The memo line in the bottom left is optional, but it is helpful for noting what the payment is for, like March rent. Finally, sign the check on the line in the bottom right. A check is not valid without your signature.

Stay Safe

Write clearly in pen so no one can change the amount. Draw a line after the written amount to fill empty space. Keep track of checks you write so you know how much money remains in your account, and never sign a blank check.

Conclusion

Writing a check is a simple skill that every adult should know. Now you are ready the next time someone asks you to pay by check!
