Introduction

Haiti, which shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic, is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Natural disasters, political instability, and violence have made economic progress extremely difficult.

A Difficult History

Haiti became the first independent Black republic in 1804, but it was forced to pay large sums to France for decades afterward, which drained its resources. Over the years, political instability and corruption have hurt investment and development.

Natural Disasters

Haiti is vulnerable to earthquakes and hurricanes. A devastating earthquake in 2010 killed hundreds of thousands of people and destroyed much of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Another major earthquake struck in 2021. Rebuilding has been slow and costly.

Current Challenges

In recent years, armed gangs have taken control of large parts of Port-au-Prince, disrupting businesses, schools, and daily life. Many Haitians rely on remittances from family members abroad. International efforts have aimed to restore security and support recovery.

Conclusion

Haiti's challenges are immense, but its people have shown remarkable resilience. Stability and security are the first steps toward a brighter economic future!
