Introduction

Check the tag on your T-shirt or jeans, and there is a good chance it says Made in Bangladesh. Over the past few decades, Bangladesh has become the world's second-largest clothing exporter after China, and this industry has transformed its economy.

The Rise of the Garment Industry

Bangladesh's garment industry began growing in the 1980s and now employs around 4 million workers, many of them women. Clothing makes up more than 80% of the country's exports. Major global brands rely on Bangladeshi factories for affordable, large-scale production.

Impact on the Economy

The garment industry has helped Bangladesh achieve strong economic growth and reduce poverty. Jobs in factories gave millions of women income and more independence. Bangladesh has been on track to graduate from the United Nations' list of least developed countries.

Challenges and Safety

The industry has faced serious problems. In 2013, the Rana Plaza factory building collapsed, killing more than 1,100 workers. This tragedy led to new safety agreements and inspections. Workers have also protested for higher wages. Relying so heavily on one industry also creates risk if global demand changes.

Conclusion

Bangladesh's garment industry shows how manufacturing can lift millions out of poverty, but also why worker safety and fair wages matter. Its journey is still being written!
