Introduction

Angola, on the southwestern coast of Africa, is one of the continent's largest oil producers. Oil has brought enormous wealth to the country, but that wealth has not always reached ordinary people.

An Oil-Driven Economy

Oil makes up the vast majority of Angola's exports and a large share of government revenue. After a long civil war ended in 2002, oil production boomed, and the economy grew rapidly. The capital, Luanda, became one of the most expensive cities in the world for foreign workers.

The Oil Price Problem

When oil prices crashed in 2014, Angola's economy suffered badly. Government revenue fell, the currency lost value, and inflation rose. Angola had also borrowed heavily from China, backed by future oil sales, adding to its debt challenges.

Diversification Efforts

Angola is trying to grow agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. It has rich farmland and diamond reserves. In 2023, it left OPEC to have more control over its oil production. Reducing poverty and creating jobs for its young population remain major goals.

Conclusion

Angola shows the risks of depending too heavily on one resource. Building a diverse economy is key to lasting prosperity!
