Introduction

Algeria is the largest country in Africa by area and one of the continent's biggest energy producers. Oil and natural gas have shaped its economy for decades.

An Energy Giant

Hydrocarbons make up the vast majority of Algeria's exports and a large share of government revenue. Algeria supplies natural gas to Europe through pipelines across the Mediterranean, including to Italy and Spain. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Europe increased its interest in Algerian gas.

The Challenge of Dependence

Because the economy depends so much on energy, falling oil and gas prices hurt Algeria badly. When prices dropped in 2014, the government faced large budget deficits. Much of the economy is controlled by the state, and the private sector remains relatively small.

Efforts to Diversify

Algeria is trying to grow agriculture, manufacturing, and renewable energy, especially solar power in the Sahara. Its young population needs more jobs, and youth unemployment is high. Reforms to attract foreign investment are seen as key to future growth.

Conclusion

Algeria shows both the benefits and risks of relying on natural resources. Building a more diverse economy will help secure its future!
