Introduction
Investment banking is one of the most famous, and most demanding, jobs in finance. Movies often show bankers in fancy suits closing giant deals, but the day-to-day reality is a lot more spreadsheets and late nights. Still, many people see it as one of the best ways to launch a career in business. So what does a typical day actually look like for a junior investment banker?
Morning: Catching Up
Most analysts start their day around 9 a.m. by checking emails and reading financial news. Overnight, senior bankers may have sent comments on presentations or new requests for clients. Analysts also keep an eye on stock prices and deals in their industry, whether it is technology, healthcare, or energy. The morning often sets the to-do list for the rest of the day.
Afternoon: Building Models and Decks
Much of an analyst's work is building financial models in Excel. These models predict how much a company is worth or how a merger might affect its profits. Analysts also create pitch books, which are slide presentations used to win new clients or explain deals. In between, there are calls with clients, lawyers, and other bankers to keep deals moving forward.
Evening: The Long Haul
Investment banking is known for long hours, especially for junior employees. It is common for analysts to work well into the night, particularly when a deal is close to finishing. Dinner is often eaten at the desk while making last-minute edits. The hours are tough, but they come with high pay and the chance to learn an enormous amount very quickly.
Conclusion
A day in investment banking is fast-paced, detail-oriented, and very demanding. Analysts spend their time building models, creating presentations, and supporting big business deals. While the hours are long, the skills and experience can open doors to careers in private equity, corporate finance, and beyond. If you love challenges and numbers, it might be the right path for you!
